Teaching First Grader?

I’ve been asked to teach/tutor a first grader in English, and to just read her books for an hour. It’s the first time I’m tutoring though… I’ve babysitted before, but I’ve only seen the first grader around, I’ve never really gotten to know her. How much should I get paid? In euros? Also, should I give her homework? If I do, what level should I give her? And I also remember how when I was little, I used to get tutoring, and my ‘teacher’ used to give me stickers or little pieces of paper at the end of each lesson… Should I do this type of thing? What do I do??

So you are just reading to her for an hour so she hears the English language while seeing the words? or will you be doing language activities to reinforce the language as well?

If you are just reading I would ask for $15 (sorry I am not sure what it is in Euros). If you are going to be doing activities, (which take much more time and energy to plan) I would ask for at least $30.

Yes, give her stickers and what not. Since you will only have her, you can buy a nice pack of stickers fairly inexpensively. I would suggest fun and fairly simple homework. I would not give homework until you begin to understand what her capabilities are though (3rd or 4th lesson).

Good luck!

Library Eyes
no homework

stickers are a great idea

when you read aloud…try to include a “souvenir” from one of the books you read…such as if you read a book about the beach then give her some shells to keep or if you read about the ginger bread boy then share those gingerbread boy cookies…if you read about Corduroy the bear then find something bear to give her…once I took a stuffed bear and got some overalls(baby clothes) and added a pocket and wrote the bear’s name on a piece of paper just like in the book, A Pocket for Corduroy

just something to make the book significant and memorable
