TEFL Overseas? Where Do I Even Being?

I am very interested in teaching English overseas. I currently hold a B.A. in History from a University here in North Carolina. I also just got back to NC from 8 months in New Zealand, where I worked for 8 months. I was wondering how to figure out what company/school to go with to get my certification? Any suggestions? I am looking for any advice from someone who is or has taught overseas. What steps did you take? How long did the whole process take you? I am looking at leaving the US after May 2008. Any help/tips/suggestions would be great!

I am just looking for a starting point because there is so much information out there that I feel a bit over my head. I have traveling experience as well as a degree. I also tutored college students for three years? Where do I start the process to get certified and leave the US with a secure job?

Much has to do with where you want to teach. Asian countries are more lenient all around, hiring many without the certificate and you can earn it while you work. You can likely get the certification from the same institute where you got your B.A. I would check there first. My process was actually very quick, but it helped being overseas already, meeting face-to-face rather than over the internet, and I had a local national helping me with the legal aspects. I also was privileged enough to start without certification because I was already teaching at a U.S. college contracted to offer courses on military installations abroad. You are right, there is a TON of information, so do what is easy for you, and that sounds like getting certified in North Carolina.

If I were you I’d go to a school in Greece and get certified there. It’s a bit more expensive, but it’s difficult for us Americans to get a visa to teach in EU countries. Otherwise, Oxford is the most prestigous TEFL program in the US. They probably have a class near you. Oxford will help you get a job once you’re done too. Figure out where you want to go and then you can research what type of certification they want and how you need to go about getting it.
