Lesson ideas around Uno’s Garden?

I have a grade 2 class and I would like to base a literacy (and integrated unit) around the book Uno’s Garden by Graeme Base. I can see potential for some literacy focuses, as well as environment and mathematics but I would appreciate other perspectives.

Has anyone else worked with this book? If so, what did you do with it.

It seems like a really great book so I would like to get the most out of it for my class.

Any other ideas around this specific book would be awesome! Thanks guys in advance for any input! =D

This is a picture book that may be targeted at a slightly younger audience, but I am sure you can make the most of it. Angles to this include “new worlds”, mathematical logic, and dealing with change. Going from a lone house in the forest, to a village, followed by a polluted city with next to no animal or plant life can be a lead. Showing how one grows into a multitude. The reverse is showing how a multitude of animals and plants dwindle to just a few. Looping back around and making a comeback could also be a sociological way of looking at this. So you have literacy, math, sociology, just to name a few that you can teach this story.
