Diversity excercises?

I teach a diversity group and would like some help and suggestions for some excercises they can do in group or on their own that will teach them the importance of diversity and to value it. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

You can assign them to look into contributions to a field of study, lets say medicine and find out all the important contributions and who they were made by. Make sure you know the answers yourself. The students should find that there have been great contributions in medicine by people of different cultures, races, religions and people from different socioeconomic classes.

This can be implemented many different ways, in groups, individually, in class etc. The thing is to show the whole picture. how our society would not be where it is today without such diversity.

Diversity comes in many forms and usually students have friends and relatives that exhibit diverse backgrounds. Have them research their friend or relative and see what contribution they have made in the student’s life or in society.

This can include handicap and and gender issues.

Depending on their age, you could have them do a diversity research project to present to the class. Perhaps assign each group of students a different “diverse” group, and find individuals who have contributed to society in some way. By doing that, they can see just exactly what people of diverse backgrounds have contributed to the world, and by seeing this, if they are of diversity themselves, they will know that it is possible to be successful despite the challenges they face.

There is a fabulous game called the diversity game,it encourages people to discuss the major religions and cultural differences in a non-competetive format. I’ve found the link for you below.
