Does anyone know the statistic for 5 minutes a day wasted in school?

I am giving a presentation about effective classroom managment. I heard a statistic one time, about 5 minutes wasted in each class equals over so many weeks of wasted time each year. Does anyone know the statistic?

I don’t know it but lets see if we can figure it out….

I know in my school this year we have 176 days. If you want total….ours would be 880 minutes or 14.67 hours that is almost 15 days in EACH class. That would be one way to figure it.

As I consult my calendar….

35 weeks of school total.

5 minutes per day or class = 25 per week (in say 1st period)

25 * 35 = 875 minutes = 14.58 hours…and with 50 minutes per class, that is still 15 days a year.

Does this help???

It seems shocking, but it has worked with me to keep my students busy and working. I teach Science and we don’t have time to waste!

I was reading a book today that said 15 minutes wasted a day equals about 3 weeks in the end.

Its not a statistic, its simple math.

If you use 5minutes as your start, and aproximately 50 minutes as your period length. That is ten percent of your day wasted. extend that to a 240 school day year… thats 24 wasted days.

figure out how many days in your school year and take ten percent.
