Why doesn’t today’s youth know what words to use?

An example is : There own son didn’t here the sound their making.

Do you know the three words not used correctly? I actually had to leave a chat board because I couldn’t stand the ignorance anymore. What do they teach in school nowadays?

This is a bit of a broad steryotype- I am sixteen and I know how to use grammer and words. You are correct, though. Many people my age do not know how to use the English language correctly. Their schools must not have stressed things such as this- I know mine did not. I had to learn it independantly. I agree that this is a problem, and this is one of the faults in our upbringing, and in the education system. There are some of us that do know how to use it, though. Dont lose faith in my generation/age group =)

Hopefully we will do well with the world when our time comes.

To answer your question: Their own son didn’t hear the sound they’re making.

WHY DOESN’T TODAY’S YOUTH KNOW WHAT WORDS TO USE?

It doesn’t begin and end at school – it begins and ends at home – with parents. It is putting our kids first, making education, morals and values all priorities. It is parents choosing to sacrifice to raise the children they brought into the world.

DO YOU KNOW THE THREE WORDS NOT USED CORRECTLY? (The three words used incorrectly are in caps with their correction in parenthesis)

THERE (Their) own son didn’t HERE (hear) the sound THEIR (They’re) making.

WHAT DO THEY TEACH IN SCHOOL?

Sure, schools and teachers are not always as adequate as they need to be in some areas but if parents are involved and doing their jobs – with their kids – then those people, those policies can begin to change.

CONCLUSION:

While it is extremely annoying and it terrifies me to think that this generation is going to raise one worse than they are, and this cycle will continue if we don’t start making changes now – get back to what worked – parents raising children and the family being first – then we truly will continue on the self destructive path we’ve allowed to begin.

Echidna eats an enchilada
I am in 10th grade and this REALLY bothers me. I’m supposed to be in advanced classes and we’ve had this stuffed shoved at us and yet NO ONE knows how to saw anything correctly. I work hard and yet no one appreciates that I can spell or that I’m not as stupid… pardon me “ignorant”… as everyone else. Geez! I HATE it when people rationalize that teenagers today are stupid. Some of us aren’t and should be treated as such. I’m so sick of a society who acts like this. Doesn’t anyone CARE about the our nations youth? Look at what the society is leaving us and say that we are dumb! We get the butt-end of everything. We’ll be the ones having to deal with global warming, space technology, and everything else.

…Wow, umm how did I get to global warming from a question about spelling? Weird.

edit

Ha,ha… I just read through some of these responses from “adults” and at least 2 people weren’t even smart enough to capitilize! And you say WE’RE stupid.

It makes me laugh.

And to reply to some of these other people who keep cussing teenagers out, only people who can’t speak correctly use cuss words to fill in the blanks.

In a country where immigrants can speak English better than our own president, it’s no wonder kids these days are in trouble when it comes to grammar and spelling. When I started back to college a few years ago there were many students just out of highschool who couldn’t spell and many of the instructors didn’t do much to correct it. I think it’s better now than it used to be but our education system really needs to crack down on students; and not just with grammar and spelling, but with teaching simple respect to elders and peers. I’m in a hurry so I can’t really give my 2 cents worth so I’m going to have to call this good. Have a wonderful day, folks!!

Because they’re not taught how to properly use a dictionary, and they are ‘dumbed down’ in public schools. I teach at a private school, we get transfer students in from public school who are in HS in public, but who test out in jr. high or below at levels in English, and when they are forced to use a dictionary, they go for the elementary dictionary. 😐 with the simplest defintions, and they do not even know how to find the definition when made to use a collegiate dictionary, when given 4 choices of the use of a word. Its pitiful.

It’s not the school, it’s that a lot of kids today could care less. It bothers me as well. I don’t understand why kids don’t care about academics.

I’m with you. We keep throwing more money at the education system and they keep returning worse results.
