What do you think of this word,”Basically” ?

Have you noticed when people talk how often that word is used. Why? Is it giving them time to think is it like the words ” and a ” that some people have to use? I have worked really hard to keep it out of my speech.

“Basically” is a throw-away filler word, overused, and usually meaningless.

It’s in the same category as “in point of fact” and “very,” and many others I can’t think of at the moment.

Mark Twain once told a group of young journalists that, if in their writing they were tempted to use the word “very,” they should use “damn” instead, and the editor would remove it.

Its just a habit of speech that people develop. Often words are used as ‘fillers’ or ‘punctuation’ to replace a pause.

For example, ‘like’ is dreadfully overused.

Folks should just become comfortable with pausing from time to time. Better yet, do not put mouth into motion before brain is in gear.

I never noticed a preponderance (hah!) of ‘basically’ before, although now that you mention it, it may be used a lot in plays and movies… therefore in our day-to-day speech. And it would be a time filler, yes, to keep the other person, the one we’re talking with, from interrupting…to keep them from saying anything while we organize a thought to say. Like this.

I have noticed people using that word in the way you mention.

I ‘ve also noticed the use of “Basically” to try to give you only one option of an understanding of the subject.

E.G.

“Basically, if you say someone is slow, you’re saying they’re retarded, or learning deficient.”

I don’t use that word, either.

Basically it’s cuz people don’t give a rats buttocks about something or basically don’t know what they’re talking about…that is why they basically tend to say “Basically”.

“Like, I mean this month is basically October. Know what I’m saying?” What’s wrong with that?
