Is it necessary to take two years of foreign language in high school?

If I’m not college-bound? Or is it required to graduate? I’m failing Spanish so it’s not doing me any good.

If it is required… I was wondering if I could take Spanish one year and then French the next and have them both count, or do both years have to be the same language?

If you are failing Spanish, French will elude you even more. If you want to attend a 4 year college, you need 2 years. I learned French WAAY back, but it is not a widely used language. I have never used the 5 years of classes I took. Spanish speakers are in high demand, and learning that language will improve your employability and pay. It seems you need to buckle down and learn one or the other. Jumping to French now, will not solve the problem.

No, you shouldn’t need two years to graduate high school unless you’re at some ritzy private school. Beware, if you take the first year you may be required to take the second year. That’s how it was at my high school.

You won’t need a foreign language to go to a community college.

I entered an honors program which required two years of a high school foreign language and I had to finish two years of a foreign language in college to complete the program. I had to leave the program because their 2nd year Spanish courses were such bullcrap.

I was able to graduate from college as a regular student without finishing the Spanish courses. I could even go to graduate school right now and no one would give a crap about those classes.

It depends on what your state and school district require. It would never hurt to take a language in high school. if you take one year of a language it would be better to take the second year of the same language so that you learn enough to be useful. With so many of the population speaking spanish that would be a good one to take.

Minimum graduation requirements vary from state to state, and from town to town within a state, and sometimes from high school to high school within a city.

You need to talk to a guidance counselor at your own school to find out what is really required.

There are no minimum foreign language requirements at our high school in Milford, New Hampshire. It is highly recommended if you are going to college, but it is not required.
