I would recommend going through rush if you are unsure. I know at UCSD it costs $20 to register and everything, but no matter what, it will be a $20 well spent. Throughout rush, you will have to opportunity to spend time with each of the sororities and see if you think you are compatible with any of them. At the end of rush, on bid day, if you receive a bid from a sorority you do not want to pledge for or if you just decide being part of a sorority isn’t for you, then you can simply decline the bid. Additionally, if you decline the bid, you can always rush next year and see if you like it any better then or get a bid from a different sorority.

People have different reasons for joining a soroity so I can’t say whether you should join. However, do check it out for yourself. They have recruiting events at beginning of the year. The only word of warning I can give you is that they may seem very nice in the beginning and I am sure most of them are but when you are serious about joining, they will make sure you earn it. I suppose this is where the horror stories come from. But they won’t tell you what you will have to do to make it in because it’s supposed to be a big secret (A friend who pledged told me this.)

There are many other organizations on campus that are socially oriented without the committment of a sorority so you should check them out. Make sure to walk around the Price Center and the Library Walk even if your classes are not that way. They will be gone after first week of school so wear comfortable shoes and explore!

I’m currently a student a UCSD as well & although, I’m not in a sorority, I think it would be best if you attend welcome week at school. It should be taking place this Monday 9/24 on our library walk & you’ll get to see all of the sororities we have on campus. Feel free to take a flyer from the different sororities & attend their first meeting & see which clubs you like best–each of them have different objectives. Hope this helps a little! & I hope you have a wonderful first year here! Best wishes to you!

I think it depends on your personality, I was in one for a while, and it was fun, I was friends w/ alot of the girls, but there is a lot of talking behind people’s backs. If your a strong, independent kind of person, and you don’t like people telling you how you should act, or what you should do, it may not be your thing. I ended up quitting.
