My advice would be look for positions like at hotels where receptionists are required for evening shifts – they expect the standard of applications to be lower as these are the positions students apply for. You can get some experience and then move on. There are also courses that can give you the skills required for such a position – this may make up for your lack of experience.
It may also be worthwhile contacting some temp agencies – they often offer free training and have flexible hours.
Basically if you want a job in this area you need to have good customer service skills, be highly presentable, as well as a good computer knowledge and typing ability. Good oral and written communication skills are also important.
I was in the same position as you a year ago – 2nd year of uni and I had only ever worked in retail, hospitality, promotions and childcare. Anyway I applied for a job as PA to a CEO of a marketing company thinking I’d never get it and sure enough I did! After getting the experience there I now do temp work which fits in around my uni and pays much better.
Good luck!
