Classes from an accredited university are worth it, the ones from non accredited ones are not, they are a waste of your money.

I absolutely recommend taking online courses. I have taken 5 of them myself due to high gas prices; I cannot afford to drive myself to college everyday.

Do keep in mine, however, that online courses are generally NOT self-paced. Teachers will monitor your progress and give you due dates just like a regular class. The only difference is flexibility. You can choose when and where to do your work, and you have a time-frame – or window – in which to complete assignments.

I don’t recommend taking online courses if you have difficulty staying motivated or have a tendency to excessively procrastinate. This will only hinder your ability to finish the class. But, if you are a good planner and have a strong desire to succeed, this would be the perfect type of class for you.

Online classes will also increase your likelihood for getting a job. Any classes will, really, as long as they pertain to the career field you are seeking. As an added bonus, your employer will have no idea that the classes you took were online – your transcript merely lists the courses you took and the grades you’ve received, whether they were online or not.

Best wishes!

Nika: I agree. Do not take online courses from any place other than an accredited university. Many *good* colleges have extension schools (UCLA has one) where you can take advantage of their distance learning program.

On surprising benefit to online courses is that you can actually learn more from the other students as they often have to post their work and ideas for everyone. In a class it’s possible just to sit there silently and succeed.

I do agree you must take the course from an accredited college. That insures quality (though even traditional classes at an accredited school can have bad teachers and be below par.) Also, you must be organized and a self-starter.

If you aren’t, take a traditional class which will help you stay up to date.

My sister took one last summer. She thought that it was worth it, because she could do the work on her own schedule, more or less, and did not need to go to class at a certain time (although the assignments had deadlines). That way, she could have a job over the summer and still take a class. Also, the class transferred to her college and counted toward her degree, so she could have a lighter schedule this semester.
