I have a BA in Psychology and it is about as marketable as a year old head of lettuce. However, Criminal Justice is even worse.

So, neither are very marketable in their field but at least you can say you have a degree. If you also want to learn something that isn’t complete BS then go for Psychology. There, you’ll learn critical thinking; in Criminal Justice you’ll just learn crap. Believe me, I’ve read Criminal Justice studies and they are useless. They write opinion that would not be tolerated in Psychology.

It depends on how far you are willing to go with a degree. You cannot do anything with simply bachelors in psychology. You have to get a doctorate before psy. is marketable. That’s the key…if you are willing to go on with your degrees and get a masters, Ph.D. they’re both good. You could go to law school with criminal justice, and make a lot more money than the Ph.D. in psychology. Basically, it comes down to how much time do you want to spend in school, and what you enjoy more.

Psychology is more versatile and applicable to a variety of posts. However, your choice depends on where you plan to go in your career. Do you want to work in the legal system or on crime scenes? A compromise would be to major in forensic psychology and choose criminal justice as a minor.

Forensic psychology is a better major because it is not as common since it is a relatively new focus area. That would give you an edge when you apply to the feds because everyone else you’re competing against will probably just be criminal justice majors, which consists of information they are just going to teach you at the academy anyway.
