The rooms in freshman housing tend to be small, but it’s not too bad if you are willing to compromise and respect your roommate’s space (and vice versa). When you arrive at college you automatically have someone to talk to and go to meals with – and the university usually does a good job of putting compatible people together. If it turns out that you and your roommate don’t get along you’re also allowed to switch rooms.

I lived in the campus dorms for my first two years of college and was very glad I did. The actual dorms certainly vary widely from campus to campus, but the ones at my school were pretty nice. It was a bit nerve-wracking living with a complete stranger that first year, but the roommate assignments seemed to work out pretty well for most of the people I met. My roommate and I got along really well. It is also a great way to meet people, especially when you’re a freshman. Everyone else is just as nervous and new as you are and being so close together in the dorms is a great way to make friends and learn the basics of college with others. My biggest complaint in the dorms was loud people, messes in the hallways, and the rather gross food in the dining halls. But it was still great. I couldn’t imagine having gone through that first year living off campus and having to figure everything out on my own. Plus, learning to live in an apartment on your own, even with a roommate, is an experience unto itself. Dorms are definitely the way to go when starting out in college. They are certainly not palaces, but you live with them as they are and make the best of it. It’s tons of fun.

It depends on the school. I went to several schools for basketball camps and found that some are really clean and others not so clean. I have stayed in dorms for college and found that if you get a good roommate then you’re ok. You can clean it up together and try and make it work. However, if you can get an appt than I would. If would probably be better than any dorm room.

It sucks, you get stuck with a random person who could end up being your friend, but more times than not ends up being a basketcase loser who never leaves the room and has sex with their bf/gf in common areas and never cleans after themself.

It’s like living in a sardine can, a sardine can full of loud stupid, drunken, horny sardines that do smell inedible!
