What extra-curricular activities that you can do in high school do good colleges like?

I’m in 8th grade and I work in the library in the summer (for the past 2) and each year I get a letter from them that says that I worked — amount of hours. What other extra curricular activities should I do to get into a better college? (In school and outside of it). Thanks!

There’s no single extracurricular that counts more than others–unless you are good enough to get a scholarship in one of the sports they offer (female track athletes are actually a little in demand).

What counts most is range. Try to get into a fair number of extracurriculars, but make sure they’re not all similar. Get some sports, some arts, some academic, some social. Off-campus, you should volunteer for the charity of your choice–it may be better to go for a charity that’s not religious-related unless you adhere to a particular religion and want to attend one of their colleges.

If your college application lists three years of tennis team, work on the school paper, national honor society, choir, junior prom co-chair, and two years of volunteering for the local animal shelter–now, that’s a list of extracurriculars that will impress favorably.

I’m in high school, and I think extra-cirricular activites can be important. Forensics and debate team, for example, look good on a resume. So do Eagle Scout and Gold Award. They can also give you good skills for the future and can help you meet new people. On the other hand, extra cirricualr activities can be demanding. After school events and meetings can really tie up a schedule. I am in the Marching Band, and that’s enough for me, considering we meet after school till 5 each Thursday. I barely have enough time to complete homework without the practice. I just cant commit with all the hardships of school.

u should pick activities you enjoy. however, i imagine picking activities that show a wide range of interests, leadership or doing community service would put you in the right direction for what you want to achieve. maybe you should volenteer at a soup kitchen or look up local charities. take all the leadership oportunities u can get. but dont just do things cos u want to get into a good uni. also, good grades help: study hard.

You can volunteer to help in senior centers, as hospital aids, convalescent homes, write letters for them, etc. Just keep a record of everywhere you help….get letters of recommendations, etc. There are lots of community service needs…..at homeless shelters, you can help serve food to people, etc.
