please help, need some clever answer~!?

I am highly experienced and well qualified to teach Martial Arts since I have been training and teaching as a back up for three different Schools. Now, there has been a talk about opening my own school. I started years ago for my own health reason. But I enjoy it and enjoy teaching as well. The problem is people. I am scared of people due to social anxiety disorder. Any tip please? I am also not a macho intimidating tough instructor type either, which means I am not like authority figure AT ALL. Some student or new students are much more ego macho tough guys, not sure if they would even show me a respect. I would also be afraid of them due to anxiety………how (if you are an instructor), do you run school and associate with your student, etc?

I suffered from social anxiety for many years–I almost dropped out of college because of it–so I’m speaking from experience. There was no clever trick that helped me overcome my fears of people. Often, people suffer from social anxiety because they are not comfortable with themselves; i.e. appearance, personality, etc. The first thing you need to do is figure out what bothers you about yourself to cause this anxiety, and identify any triggers that may set you off in social settings. For me, I was a tomboy growing up and being around groups of women, expecially older women, was very intimidating for me. References to shopping, clothing, or anything usually associated with the female sex set me off. I would begin to get hot, stutter, and sometimes blurt out rude or random things. I had to accept that I’m imperfect and that it was okay for me not to fit into a certain stereotype before I truly felt comfortable around women.

If you’re truly suffering from social anxiety, getting into an acting class or trying something like that is probably not the answer. If anything, it might cause you to go into a state of paranoia. I would suggest some serious thinking: outline your career goals and what it is going to take to get there. Outline personal goals and start with the easiest ones first. This way you won’t get overwhelmed.

As for respect, your qualification for teaching should get you all the respect you deserve. However, you also need to watch how you represent yourself. This may sound funny, but starting with younger ages, where as an adult you will be an obvious authority figure, will help prepare you for the things you are likely to encounter from adults.

Take some acting lessons. I’m serious. Make a complete idiot of yourself in front of people. After you’ve done that a few times, you can get up in front of any group and do anything.

Remeber this – When you’re standing in front of a group you are there to entertain yourself.

Some of my colleagues have used the Toastmasters club to help them over the nervousness of being in front of people. Most times when you are in front of a group of people they want you to succeed as much as you do and as the Master you automatically command respect of the students. My sister-in-law runs her own school in martial arts and she is a sawed off little runt but she is an in charge kind of person but even she has had problems with these macho types. Her solution to these clowns was to use them as an example once they are knocked flat on their back a few times it usually knocks the wind out of their sails. Lastly if that doesn’t work she kicks them out of the school she doesn’t want bullies.
