Studying Abroad. What will impress the people who are interviewing me?

I already have a great passion for this.

As a person who has interviewed prospective exchange students before, I look for several things — open mindedness, self reliance and a sense of responsibility. As an interviewee you need to demonstrate that you have those characteristics — a daunting task!

One thing I will watch for is over dependence on parents. If you always look to a parent before answering, I don’t see you as a good candidate. I’ll also ask you how much you interact with people of other cultures. Do you socialize with exchange students currently at your school? Finally, I’ll want to know about a time when you really screwed up something badly … what did you do to take responsibility for your action? I’ve actually had candidates admit to me things they haven’t told their parents!

Hope that helps! Good luck!

There is a very intersting research made by Rob Lawrence on the benefits of Stuying abroad for Australian companies.

According to this report the most important benefit of having an international experiece for companies is the values that you obtain from this experience.

Organisations look for staff that can be independent, responsable and with global perspectives. This are usually the lessons that you get when you have an international experience. It is important to backup this with some fact or example of your experience.

I hope you find this information useful.

Cheers
