Which one?! Speech, Debate or both?

I am a sophomore in high school and I can’t choose what to do. I want to be in speech and debate but i fear that it will be too much work, will it? I was wondering about doing Interprative Speech because I like doing theater but I also like debate. I was wondering how Speech differs from Theater and if debate is a good idea for me to take. Thanks!!

You can’t compete in both all of the time, almost all of the time the tourneys will run on the same days in your little district as well as in your big district. Of course, there are usually a few debate -only tourneys. I do speech but it depends on the person.

I thought that the debate and speech seasons were at different parts of the year? Many of our debaters use speech to prepare for debate during the off season.

Debate is more about quickness of mind and reasoning. Speech is captivation, expression, liveliness. Theater usually involves more moving around than speech, and often involves props and costumes.

If you really like both, then there shouldn’t be such a thing as too much work. Whatever you choose depends on what you want to get out of it. (and I disagree with stepadoo, debate is not speech, in debate, there is not so much attention to facial expression, gestures, or voice inflection; the very things that make speech…speech)

I took speech and debate both this year but during different semesters. Speech was a lot easier and less work but I ended up liking debate better, plus I learned how to research things a lot more efficently. It kinda depends on how well you already are at public speaking. If you think your good you probably dont need and wont learn a ton from speech. If you need some work it’ll be hard in debate without already having those skills.

We didn’t have a debate class or team, but I took a speech class and it was one of the best things I could have done. It taught me how to speak in front of people, something I have had to do many times in the years since h.s. It helps you to put together a speech so that it’s interesting to the listeners, and you will also learn how to give the speech by referring to, but not reading from your notes. If you feel you can’t do both, take speech. I graduated over 30 yrs ago and I am still using what I learned in that class. Thank you Mrs. Schulz, wherever you are!!

Definitely debate. Debate is speech + the ability to research facts + present arguments well + teamwork + fun. I was in my school debate team, and it was a great experience. It will definitely give you an upperhand in writing and speaking skills. Good luck.

That’s a tough one; a very pArry style move if you catch my meaning. But it is odd that the other day the president gave a speech to veterans and I could only find an audio recording and nothing from any mainstream news website. Good Question.

I agree with Cats4me. Speech is something you can use no matter what career path you end up taking. The more you speak in front of an audience, the more comfortable and better you’ll be.
