It comes from the word ‘caliber’. From the Middle French ‘calibre’, from Old Italin ‘calibro’, from Arabic ‘qAlib’, meaning a shoemaker’s last.
Which reminds me of a completely unnecessary and unrelated joke. A man who worked for the circus, whose job it was to be shot out of a cannon, told his boss he was quitting. The boss said “Oh no! Where will we ever find another man of your caliber?”
