Who should I use for graduate school recommendations?

I’m 25 years old and will be applying to grad schools later in the year. I finished my undergrad 3 years ago with a BA in Computer Science & Dance/Theatre (weird combo, I know). Since then, I never really utilized either degree – I’ve been working as a bartender in various New York City bars and clubs pretty much since my graduation. Now I want to go back and get a Masters in Software Engineering but I really have nobody to use for recommendations. I would feel silly asking one of the nightclub owners to write me a recommendation (nor do I think they are qualified in any way), and my head Theatre professor is the only teacher who remembers me well enough to write something.

What should I do about these letters when I lack recent professors or traditional professional contacts?

Interesting situation. Nothing wrong with using your Theatre professor as one referee. For the others though it is going to have to be a couple of your computer science professors. Are you sure they don’t remember you or you just don’t think they do? I’d pick a couple of professors from whom you took more than one course, e-mail them reminding them who you are, explaining your situation and asking if they would write such letters. You might be surprised.

Good luck

Are you living in or near the area where you went to college? If so, how about making appointments to go talk to a few of your computer science professors? The person who answered above is correct – it would be great if you could get recommendations from two CS professors. If you go see them, their more likely to remember you and you can tell them a little about yourself, how you did in the class, etc. They’ll need to know a little about you in order to write you a good recommendation. Also, ask them if they’re willing to write you a “positive recommendation”. Three years is not that long ago.

If not, then call them on the phone or email them, try to remind them who you are and ask them if they’re willing to write you a positive recommendation. Good luck.
