Biology degree to become a plastic surgeon?

I am currently getting my degree in Biology but have recently decided to go on to med school when I am done. I would eventually like to become a plastic surgeon. Will a bio degree be acceptable to med school. Someone mentioned a degree in Chemistry but I do love biology so I would prefer not to have to switch.

A major in Biology is more common than a major in Chemistry. You take Bio 1 and 2 generally biochemestry and A&P 1 & 2. You have to take Chem and O Chem 1 & 2. A & P are bio classes and if you count Biochem as bio instead of chem ๐Ÿ˜‰ then you have more bio than chem classes. That being said you can major in almost anything and still go to med school as long as you have your science requirements and it is always best to choose a mjor you love and will do well in since your GPA is all too important when trying to get in. Loving Bio and doing well in Bio will help you maintain a higher science GPA and make you more competitive to the schools.

Don’t listen to anyone about how long it will take, most non-traditional med students (those who start later) are fully aware of what is involved and if that is what you truly want to do you need to do it. I was 27 when I decided to go back to school and I have 2 years of my 14 down ๐Ÿ™‚ More power to you and good luck!

Yes, in fact, most students prefer to major in Biology than Chemistry because the requirements needed in order to get into medical school coincides with the Biology major requirements too. So it is probably best if you major in Biology because it seems you like this subject more than Chemistry and it will prepare you to get into med school. Have you considered pharmacy school? Med schools don’t care what you majored in. You can major in bio BA, bio BS, music, dance, art, engineering, English, history – it does not matter. What matters is that you pick a major you like, because you need to do very well in it. In addition, you also must complete the med school pre-req classes, which are a specific series of science and math classes. It may be the case that, due to the pre-med classes you must take, yiou’d automatically fit the requirements for the bio BS. But talk to your advisor once you get to campus.
