Generally a desire to learn other languages, and master one’s own. It usually requires that you approach languages from a scientific perspective. That is you learn the mechanics, structure, and use, before you really understand the language.

The minimum is to have a command of the language — something that you appear to be lacking. Beyond that — the requirements are pretty much the same as they are for any other major in the Liberal Arts.
