You’ll need to complete a bachelors degree – usually in science or pre-med – before heading to medical school.

Most bachelor programs in the liberal arts and sciences require you to take some classes like English composition, as well as a number of classes in social sciences (History, Economics) and humanities (literature, art, music). Usually, you’ll just have to complete a certain number of credits in each of those areas. You will also need to take 2 years of a foreign language.

For your particular degree, you’ll probably need at least 2-3 semesters of calculus, and I would strongly recommend at least 1 class in statistics. You’ll need the calculus for your physics classes, and later in medical school I’m pretty sure you’ll need even more math, physics, statistics, and maybe even some engineering classes (math math math) as well as the normal stuff in biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and all those other -ologies.

I’d also highly recommend taking a class on public speaking and presentations. You’ll be surprised how useful a skill this is. At my college, this even counted as a humanity.

Many people take AP classes in high school, which can help you place out of some requirements in college. This can reduce the number of classes you’ll need to complete for your bachelor’s degree. Check if your high school offers these, and arrange your schedule now so you’ll be able to take these later on.

1) It is spelled college.

2) You have to take everything. When you enter college, even if you are dead set on a specific major you will find yourself pondering Shakespeare’s wonderful use of irony and parallelism between stanzas…and then realize “what the?! 101 English!? But I want to be an engineer!”

Yes, but some of the requirements can be fulfilled in High School. Check with your school guidance counselor.

You probably need them because it will help you deal with people and it is general education. All is helpful.
