Your best bet would be to talk to an academic advisor and see how the courses you have already taken can be used towards nursing or school counselor. Not all nurses start in the er, but it can still be fairly demanding work. It is shift work, although that may work for you now, do you really want to be working 12 hour shifts at any hour of the day? How will this work when you want to start a family? Are you comfortable with working on weekends? You may be required to do a couple shifts in er, but you can specialize in different fields such as geriatrics or paediatrics. Also, the pay is fairly well.

Maybe you could ask to job shadow a school counselor or a nurse and see what you are really interested in. Or even talk to students in nursing and see what it really entails.

It is frustrating picking a major/career. I’ve changed my major 3 times and quit school after two years so I could run around europe to, “find myself”. I’m in school now…almost done, and happy with my choice – economics.

Go to your school’s advising office. They should have some career office at your school to help you decide or take an aptitude test. Don’t worry though… I know lots of people that switched their majors their junior/senior year.

And there’s nothing wrong with being a school counselor. The pay is decent… each school district has different requirements and job descriptions. Just don’t major in psychology!! (If you do and don’t get into a master’s program you’re screwed.)

Have you ever taken an aptitude test? Does the community college you go to offer career counseling? If so, see if they have some kind of aptitude test you can take.

Or, try this website: www.funeducation.com/

They have a free career and personality test.

Good luck!
