What can I do with a BA in African/African American Studies with a minor in History?

Hello all,

I keep going back and forth on what to do with my degree. I just need an opinion of what careers my major & minor is best fit for.

First of all, let me say contragulations! I am also an African American Studies Major (actually a Pan-African Studies Major), and I personally believe that it’s one of the best majors you can pursue in college because you are studying apart of World and American History that is not generally included in most school curriculums. The fact that you minored in history shows that you’re knowledge spans further than just African or African American History. The question is… what do you want to do? Where does your passion lie and how can your education in African/African American Studies help you embark on a career that will allow you to use your talents and knowledge passionately?

Teaching social studies seems to be the most logical choice but, I must say as a social studies teacher myself, these positions are extremely limited because schools need more special ed/science/math/reading teachers.

Your particular degree would be very useful in working for the government to prepare troops/officials dealing with African nations, especially if you speak a foreign language.

You could also join a research university and non-profit organization that studies these topics, possibly writing articles or textbooks; perhaps you could put your expertise towards a political cause.

Lastly, if you wanted to get at least 18 graduate credits, you can teach at a community college, which is far easier to obtain employment than traditional K-12 jobs.

Majors like that basically lead to low paying jobs, because a degree in those majors are not really useful for the real world, unless you plan on becoming a teacher. On top of that it’s not worth getting into debt to just further pursue a Masters degree in it. I think a BA in those majors/minors is only good preparation for Law School. Other than that your options are limited, because your major is so specific and there isn’t a demand for it. You wouldn’t have gained any skills that would prepare you for other jobs.

i think of which you may look right into a container alongside with social artwork or coaching. i be responsive to which you probable dont desire to handle in the present day’s knucklehead yet there are fairly some execs to coaching. If i could have primary i could have went into it. I definately recommend it. i be responsive to 3 states with shortages on instructors pays back pupil loans, supply housing low value whilst your purchase a house, etc. and don’t ignore the two months off for the period of the summer time which you will gets a commission for. Dont hardship approximately people who call your degree ineffective reason its no longer. I went to college for electric powered engineering and that i do civil engineering so this sort of degree doesnt count all that count is which you have one… good luck

Go to grad school, teach, work in a museum, help preserve historic sites, do historic archaeology, ask ‘would you like fries with that?’
