No the Eastern Star an Freemasons are not a cult as a matter of fact we are not allowed to talk about religion in any Lodge functions. Our “degrees” are all based on biblical stories and you must profess a belief in a supreme being but that’s it. I have Christian, Muslim, and Jewish brothers in my lodge and I’m told there is even Hindu Masons.

A cult is a secret society which uses psychological tools to brainwash potential members. Even the description of the word “occult” means hidden, secretive. If you are in a cult, you are threatened with death if you try to leave. You cannot even tell people that you belong to a cult. I hope you can see how dangerous they are. Also, many cults require that you give all of your money to them, they tell you how to live, how to think, what to do, where you can go, who you can talk to, what to believe, how to act, and they make you believe that you deserve to get punished if you do something wrong. People who flee from cults usually have to go to mandatory counseling afterwords because of all the psychological trauma. Can you say, “David Koresh”? That’s dangerous!

I in fact know two people who fled a cult in Pennsylvania. And I know another who fled one from central Indiana. They describe the living conditions – which most of us couldn’t even imagine. They had to wear only certain clothes, take a bath when told, eat when they were allowed, give 100% of their income to, believe that they deserve physical punishment for “sins” (such things as hanging from one arm for hours at a time, being slapped multiple times all over the body with a burning stick, not being allowed to eat or bathe for a week, and some far worse ones that I shouldn’t describe here). I was told of the utter confusion and shock they experienced after fleeing. They were messed up phychologically, and they knew it.

I guess I can go ahead and pose your question right back to you. Because when you have experience with cults or have seen their effects, you understand how this question seems kind of silly.

Neither the Order of the Eastern Stars (not Start) nor the Freemasons are a cult.

You join of your own free will, you can quit any time, and nothing bad will happen to you or anyone you know if you do.

Mothers and Grandmothers belong to it- that doesn’t suggest a cult.

anything that starts with “The Order of” is indeed a cult, be wary.
