Need help with college essay, anyone have any ideas?

Prompt: Choose an issue of importance to you-the issue could be personal, school related, local, political, or international in scope-and write an essay in which you explain the significance of that issue to yourself, your family, your community, or your generation.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do my essay on? I am so bad at starting paper, heh. If it helps, or matters, I am applying to The University of Texas as Austin. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

How about writing why this education is important to you? Use an unusual reason for why this education is important to you- maybe you’re the first in your family to go to college, maybe you’re an immigrant first-generation going to college, or maybe what you are going to do with your education( help patients if you’re going to be a doctor, writing about the truth if you’re to be a journalist, etc….you get the idea).

Another idea is to write about who was your inspiration for higher studies- mom, dad, an academic celebrity, a teacher? Maybe you could write about the opportunities you have here compared to other nations where opportunities are sparse ?

In the end, be sure that whatever you write about is one that connects you to your family, community or the world and yet applies to education. Also, have it read by your friends and parents before you send it out. If they don’t like the essay, more likely the college panel won’t like it either.

The key is to be yourself. Remember that admissions officers read MULTIPLE essays a day. Don’t be boring and just tell them what you think they want to hear; be honest and forthright. Before beginning, try brainstorming as many possible topics as possible. You could do lists, concept maps, free writes, whatever works for you . . . I’m a firm believer in false starts, too. Sometimes we just need to get our ideas DOWN on paper in order to fully formulate our thoughts. Lastly, ask for help. It is definitely worth it to have a teacher/adult friend proof-read and conference your work!

Good luck!

You could do it on a characteristic that is important to you like– trust, honesty, etc.. and why. Or how a certain person has impacted your life and why…
