Are you concerned about the numbering or the course? If it’s the numbering, a college can choose to assign whatever number they want to a course. English 100 is usually English Composition or College Writing (both are the same). It’s usually assigned 100, 101, or 01 (as in ONE). Don’t worry about the number. This course is usually required of all students, regardless of how they do on placement scores or standardized tests. Find out if you need it for your major or if you need it to transfer if you’re at a 2-year school. Worst case, ask a counselor at your school.

At my school, English 100 is a remedial class and the only ones who take it are those who scored below a standard score for the Verbal section of the SAT or the English section of the ACT. Check with the school’s website or talk to an adviser to find out if that is the case at your school, and if you are actually supposed to be in there. There may be people in there who don’t care about college, or who don’t care about writing, but you will probably find those people in any Freshman-level class. In my experience the people who take English 100 are just the ones who need a little more help getting up to speed in college-level writing, and they may be very talented in other areas such as math or art.

Without knowing the currriculum at your school, its impossible to tell what English 100 and 101 actually represent. Talk to your advisor, and they will set you straight.
