I want to become a Pharmacist, but am not quite sure how to get there.?

I would like my major in college to be Pharmacy, and I know that in order to do that, I would need to complete 6 year of school, and recieve my Doctorate of Pharmacy. The only thing is, is that I am not sure if I am supposed to apply to a school that offers Pharmacy, then go there for a couple of years, and then enter the Pharm D program, of If i would just be accepted straight into the program. Can anyone help me with this? Also, any Pharmacy schools would you reccomend?

I am a pharmacy student myself, and let me tell you, it’s a complicated road to getting there! You can go to any 4-year university that you want to and major in practically anything, provided that you meet the requirements for pharmacy schools. Many pharmacy schools will post their requirements on their websites, so I suggest you look there. Just a couple off the top of my head would be chemistry, biology, calculus, etc.

After you get your required classes done, you can apply to pharmacy school, without a bachelors. BUT, most pharmacy schools like their students to have a bachelors since it makes you a more competitive student. At my pharmacy school, only 3% of the students DO NOT have their bachelors. I’d definitely recommend having one…

Your junior year of college, you apply to pharmacy school. Some schools require the PCAT, which is the MCAT for pharmacy schools. Most do not, however. Again, look it up on pharmacy school websites to see if they require them or not. I don’t know which state you are located in, so since I’m in CA I’ll tell you which ones are good here. UCSF ranked number 1 in the nation. If you google pharmacy school rankings, you’ll be given the list nationally. Obviously the better the school, the better the pay, but no matter where you go, a degree is a degree.

Pharmacy schools offer only a Pharm D degree (which is a doctorate). This usually lasts 4 years. Some schools, like UOP, finishes in 3 but only because they go year-round.

Maybe I am not understanding your question, because I do not understand where you are getting the “six” years from. It’s usually 4 for undergrad and 4 for pharmacy school…

Good majors to choose are chemistry and biology, mostly because then all your pharmacy requirements are met.

I’d search the web if I were you. A lot of pharmacy schools have wonderful websites that even list their open house dates where you can go check out the school. Also, if your university has a pre-pharmacy or pre-health adviser, definitely go talk to them. They can give you valuable information and write letters of rec later on down the road.

Good luck!

Right now, I’m going through a route to get into a pharmacy program. I’ve been admitted to a UC school and I’m majoring in pharmacological Chemistry. Then when i graduate, I’m going to apply for pharmacy school.

you don’t have to major in pharmacological chemistry to be admitted to a pharmacy school for your Pharm D. You can major in whatever you want. Just as long as you finish all the required classes to apply for graduate school.

My friend is doing the same but shes is majoring in nutrition just in case if she can’t handle the chemistry stuff.

Most people don’t get accepted straight into a 6 year Pharmacy program. They usually attend 2 years of undergraduate studies focused on science studies. Afterwards you can apply to a Pharmacy program.

University of Florida offers a very good yet very hard program. It pretty hard to get accepted into it also.
