Help, can’t decide on a college major!!?

I may have asked this before but I’ve been so confused lately..

Where I see myself in 10 years…writing, drawing, perhaps doing a comic or manga, doing interviews, being very successful.

The problem is, how do I get there? What kind of degree do I need to do all those things I want to do? Fine Arts? Creative Writing? Visual Communication?

I don’t know, please help!

Which one do you feel is most important to you in a future job? You can possibly do all….but pick one to focus on in school. Which one do you ABSOLUTELY LOVE to do?

You could consider going to an art school, they have drawing classes, and a lot of other students that like doing comic and manga drawings, most that I know studied towards a bachelors degree in Media Arts & Animation, Game Art & Design, or Graphic Design.

If your really serious about this, and this is the career path you want to follow, I would suggest going to the Art Institute, most locations have these majors and there are locations across the US. Depending on the location, the majors at the school depend on the job market in that area. The Art Institutes are EXPENSIVE but well worth it if YOU REALLY REALLY WANT to pursue a career in any of the areas listed above. The school was great from my experience, I got lots of help from instructors, the administrative and instructors and career center are very supportive. I studied Graphic Design but felt that it wasn’t for me, it’s not who I really am, and I can’t see myself doing that for 10 years or more, considering that it’ll probably take that long to pay off the loans to pay for that school.

BUT if your looking to take classes and hone your skills in the other areas, you can take classes on the side at a community college or anywhere that offers it, if you want to hone your skills.

Are you looking to go to a University, community college, or specific school?

If you need any more advice, just message me I’ll gladly help. =)

Hmmm…you sound a lot like me! 🙂 My suggestion would be visual communication for your degree field. I myself have chosen business, but only because my real dream (writing) has no opportunities for me here in this area. Moving is not an option, so I chose business. The wonderful thing about the arts is that you can always get certificates through distance learning rather than a conventional university. The visual communications degree followed by a career certificate or two in creative writing or another art field might just show how serious you are about making your dream of living off your art a reality. Good luck!

You should use a job search engine and see what kind of artistic jobs are out there. Determine which jobs are the most appealing to you, and which ones sound like something you actually want to do. They will typically list out the requirements for education and work experience necessary to get the job.

Look at the types of majors they’re looking for. You may find a pattern. They may all be looking for visual arts, communications, computer science or graphic arts. One or more of these majors is probably available at your school. What will separate you from everyone else with these same degrees is what kind of experience or internships you will have. So look at the university’s curriculum for all related majors and see which ones allow you to have a semester or a summer of required work experience. When you get your internship it’ll help you to see where you fit in.

Within one of the graphic/arts/communications majors try to take as many electives as possible that will give you a wide range of experience–until you’re positive which direction you want to head in.

It’s kind of like working backwards.

pick a job, pick a major, pick the classes!

Just start out as undecided and see where it takes you. When you go to college, you will get to see what kinds of majors there are. If you take gen ed courses, you can see which ones you like best and maybe that will help you choose. I started out undecided, then switched to communication, then switched to arts management. Now, 2 years after I graduated, I finally got my first real job in the health care industry, and I still have no idea what I want to do with my career. So don’t sweat it. If you decide to go into, let’s say, journalism, and then decide to switch majors to communication, it won’t hurt you because the classes for each major will be so similar.

Honestly, a fine arts degree probably won’t help you very much with comics, although there are art classes you can take (drawing, perhaps some graphic design for layout ideas). Writing will probably be more useful.

So… it is variety of stressful using fact those are 2 very assorted issues. From my adventure, journalism classes are fairly aggressive and extensive, despite the fact that it varies from college to college. And journalism isn’t possibly ingenious writing. Journalism is writing articles for newspapers, gaining knowledge of and informing the customary public. in case you majored in journalism, you will possibly maximum possibly be writing articles for newspapers, magazines, or doing information declares. you are able to double significant in the two, which could be functional in direction of a activity as a nutrients critic, yet you do no longer choose for that. yet, properly, you have no longer even began making use of to faculties yet, so which you do no longer certainly could think of approximately what you pick for to significant in. till you have been generic into engineering or track or some thing, you do no longer certainly could think of approximately what you pick for to concentration on using fact faculties do no longer assume you to correctly known what you pick for to do at the same time with your existence in first 365 days, and that they furnish you with a raffle to take an array of classes to attempt some waters. And alongside the way, you’re able to %. up some new pursuits, and a variety of of alternative the belongings you concept you will like certainly seems to be a nightmare. You announce your majors before the beginning up of your 2nd 365 days, yet even then there is room to take classes exterior of your application and choose what you pick for to do. And if it helps to ease your strategies, lots of employers do no longer even care what variety of degree you have as long as you have a level – it shows you’re a clever stressful worker! do no longer problem approximately it too lots for now. you have an concept of what you will like, and that’s already magnificent. commence analyzing into the a number of faculties you’re involved in, and learn the a number of classes. do somewhat examine, talk on your college counselor and be conscious to the colleges and classes that sound the main alluring to you.

It’s great to have such ambitious dreams, but it doesn’t hurt to have something solid to fall back on–not something boring, but something that uses your skills to pay the bills. You can major in something like graphic design (designing everything from Web sites to magazines to product packaging to billboards) and minor in English or art.

Remember that you will take classes that are not within your major–you’ll have electives, and likely requirements in all different departments. So you can major in one thing and take classes in totally different departments.

Good luck.
