Strayer University is multi-campus proprietary college with a home in DC that operates for a profit the same as Univ Phoenix, Capella, Corinthian, etc… [disclosure: I own stock in Apollo, COCO, and CPLA] – they are accredited by the Middle States Commission which is a regional accreditor. They were founded in 1892

USNWR ranks them as “International, specialized, and other institutions, unranked” which is the same as University of Phoenix.

They are probably equal to any of the bottom colleges in your state – they are not “the most prestigious college” out there — that would be someplace like Harvard, Princeton, Yale, etc…

It’s very possible that they are better than the likes of East Podunk State University at Way Outback Campus. They won’t be equal to YourState State University or the University of YourState.

If you look around your community, there are probably evening and/or weekend courses being offered by your local state university or community college. There may also be a campus of one of the colleges that serve military communities such as Webster U. or U Maryland. Any of these would be higher on the prestige scale than Strayer U.

That said, Strayer is regionally accredited and that means they are at least equal to or better than whoever is the lowest tier 4 out there. It’s very likely that they are not the worse RA college in the country.

I was thinking about attending Strayer University because they offer evening classes that work with my busy schedule. I would like to attend a state college but the cost and the schedule is a bit more harsh. Does anyone know if this is a good college or is it a waste of time like those fly by…

Well it really depends and as you can see form other replies here it really has some mixed opinions. Either way, if you are interested in a distance degree I would always recommend to check out some local community colleges. Employers don’t like the proprietary/for profit universities because traditionally, they’ve not been of good academic quality. Whether or not U of P *is* of good academic quality, the fact of the matter is that employers don’t respect those degrees. You can argue against that all you want, but it is what it is, and you’ve got to deal with the perceptions that are out there, because no matter how you feel, others feel differently, and it’s going to impact you re: your career. Of course, that’s not true of all employers. But it’s true of enough of them that I tend to caution students who are considering schools like U of P, Strayer, etc. There are reputable, traditional, brick and mortar schools that offer online degrees. Check the community colleges and public/state colleges in your home state first, because they’re reputable and will be your least expensive option. If your state doesn’t offer what you need, look at the many online degrees offered by such reputable colleges as UMass Amherst, Drexel U, Florida State, U Illinois Springfield, U Denver, Regis U, Northeastern U, Southern New Hampshire U, and many others.

Employers will not laugh at the college you attend, but they may question it and ask for transcripts if they suspect that you lied about it.
