It depends on where you want to work. Some states are ‘Free to Work’ states — that means that you need no specialized training or certification to call yourself an Interior Designer. All you have to do is call yourself one and you are one. Other states require that you have certification from organizations such as ASID to be able to legally practice as an Interior Designer.

I would recommend that if you want to be an Interior Designer that you go to school (make sure that the program is ASID certified) and get your degree in that field. You may live if a Free to Work state now, but if you ever moved you want to be able to take your skills with you. Plus, very few firms will hire IDers that are not ASID certified, so you may have a hard time getting the job without it.

Its a good idea especially if you want to work for a company. It isn’t really necessary if you want to be a one person business. You just have to spend money on getting a logo made, business cards, and maybe a website.

The good thing about school is that you’ll be creating a portfolio of your interior designs as you go through school. People and companies will take you seriously if you have a portfolio AND and education when you start looking for clients.

No… Its good to have if you want to work for a big agency, but your best bet would be to find a Real Estate Investor and offer your services to them at a good price and show them what kind of skills you have. I am an investor and actually hired my wife as a designer after letting her design a few of the homes I had. She had no experience and background and was actually a teacher at the time. She has now made a name for herself and works for me only Part Time :(…

Also try maybe working as an intern..

To get certified (ASID for example) and belong to the professional organizations (and get discounts), YES.
