‘Normal” is represented in a wide range of behaviors. I don’t think you’re weird. Just because you seem to be interested in some things your peers may not be doesn’t make you abnormal. Most of us at 17 feel like outcasts even when we aren’t. It’s kind of part of growing up and individuating ourselves, learning about who we are. I think you are focusing on the things that make you different rather than the things that make you similar and unite you with others of your age group. Chances are they also have things that set them apart and feel like outcasts as well. You don’t have to have the same interests to make friends. In fact, diverse experiences are often what bring people together. It makes you more interesting and you learn more from one another when you aren’t just carbon copies. I’m not sure being average is much to aspire to, but I think you are well within normal limits. Your inability to make friends might have more to do with being that awkward age than so much with the activities you enjoy. You sound very much like my own children, actually, and one of them was quite the loner in high school. At 30, you would never know it. Be patient with yourself. Put yourself out there a little more. Being vulnerable is a challenge at any age, but that really is what it takes. You have to risk a little to make friends and feel an affiliation with people.
