Do I STILL have a chance of getting into a good college??? PLEASE HELP ME!!?

I am going to the 11th grade this year and am looking toward college. Last year [10th grade] I got HORRIBLE grades, and didn’t make the honor roll first semester. On my final report card I barlely earned a 3.0 leaving my cummulative G.P.A. a little over 3.1. In addition, I recieved a “D” in English [which I STRONGLY dissagree with being that English is my strongest subject], took an A.P. course, but didn’t take the A.P. test, will only be in Algebra 2 next year, and CAN’T play sports to save my life!!!

Naturally, I will be trying my ABSOLUTE best to make up for my past failure, but I am still very much worried about my future. Please tell me, do I stand a chance at gaining admittance into a good University??? Anything you know of that I must do, PLEASE tell me!!

You do have a chance, but you’re going to have to work really hard this year to get your grades back up. Colleges expect to see either continued success or a strong upward trend junior year. You may want to consider saving some space in the “anything you’d like to tell us?” section of your applications to explain the D in English, too, though be careful to avoid ducking responsibility.

Also, assuming you can afford it, take the AP tests if you’ve done the classwork! A 1 or 2 looks better than not trying at all.

If you take AP’s then take the exam. Even if you fail it will show them you did something to prepare for the exam instead of just take the class. You could get into a community college with a 3.1 easily. You might even consider dual enrollment (taking a college course while in high school) during your senior year. Some people go to community college and then transfer if their high school grades aren’t that good. I think you can get into a good school still. Maybe not an ivy league school but you can make it. 🙂

Work hard, and if you don’t get into a good university, go to a community college. If you do well at a community college, you can transfer to a good university.

Also, if you want to do better in English, be more careful about your writing – even when you’re online.

GPA is meaningless out of context. A 3.1 could be OK if you go to a tough high school. Rank in class is much more important.

Score well on the SAT/ACT, write stellar entrance essays and get positive letters of recommendation from teachers or individuals with influence at universities.

You likely won’t get into a top-tier school unless you get perfect scores on the SAT/ACT but a “good” school isn’t out of the question.
