Can you only start grad school in the fall semester?

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not you can start graduate degree programs in the spring semester, or if they always have to start in the fall?

I’m going to graduate next December and plan on going to grad school for psychology… I’m wondering if I have to wait til the next Sept to start or not.

Also, anyone know of any good psych grad programs in Massachusetts or Rhode Island? Thanks!

I think all schools will be different. I’ve gone to two different grad schools, & at the first one you could start at the beginning of the fall or spring semesters. At the one I’m currently at you can start at the beginning of the fall, spring, & even summer semesters.

I think a lot depends on the size/reputation of the school. . . big schools may not let you since you’d be out of cycle with their normal introductory coursework, but some others might if you talk with people there.

I started my MS in a January, so it’s at least *possible*. However, I also went to this school for my BS, had been dually enrolled for one class in my MS program the previous fall (as in taking a grad-level class for grad credit but still paying undergrad tuition rates and counting toward my full-time hour requirement), and already sort of had a better background for the introductory coursework with my own degree than a lot of people coming in with the “normal” lead-in degree for that field did.

Depends on the school. I’ve been looking and some only allow it in the Fall, others offer enrollment in both Fall and Spring. (Hoping for spring, myself–I graduate in December and would like to take a year off.)

I started in the spring. Some schools will let you apply for the spring semester – usually it depends on if they have assistantships left from the first semester. If someone dropped out or got their own funding, they might free up spring semester funding and you’ll get lucky. But not all schools will consider it and not every year.

graduate admissions are governed by the academic department, not by the graduate school. you have asked an ncorrect question.
