It doesn’t matter. However, it may be beneficial for you to consider having both degrees cater towards the same sort of discipline or compliment one-another. For example, it may be worth while to consider getting a BA in Social Pscyhology and an MA in Social Work. This allows your Social Psychology knowledge to compliment your MA in Social Work.

US occupational outlook handbook has more general career info: www.bls.gov/oco and search ‘social worker’. As far as I know, one doesn’t necessarily need to already have a bachelor’s degree in social work though there may be some programs that offer ‘advanced standing’ to those with a BSW (bachelor’s in social work). A BSW program requires clinical fieldwork as the MSW programs do. Some bachelor’s programs in the more general ‘human services’ offer the option to do a clinical in the social services field, and that may help to give you much more credibility when applying to grad school for social work.

Someone mentioned social psychology which may be an option though I don’t know how many schools offer that specific subcategory in psychology 🙂 Another option is to major in sociology since you may have to take similar courses as the ones most needed for a MSW (master’s in social work) such as research statistics and various humanities courses. Each school of social work will have their own set of prereq’s and requirements, so it’s best to check with each one and to apply to a few different schools due to the potential for competition.

My sister got her BA in psychology and than her MA in social work. I know a lot of people who’s master’s had little to do with their Masters. Some times people decided that what they majored in at that undergraduate level isn’t what they want to base their career on. Thus when they go to graduate school for their MA or MS they change their course of study. Hope you have good luck deciding what to major in.
