I Love My Kitties

Based on my interests, what major would be good for me?

Ok, I will list interests I have and I would love if everyone listed potential majors and careers in those majors based upon my interests. (Plus something that makes atleast 30K)

Interests:

*Animals (But Cant Afford Vet College..Plus Too Long)

*Writing (I was in HS Yearbook Staff. I love writing, and proofreading/editing other’s stories).

*Taking pictures

*Drawing (Cartoon style characters is what Im best at/Illustrating)

*Traveling (Ive traveled my whole life, and there are tons more places I would love to go!)

*Receptionist Type Work (I love filing, sorting, organizing)

*Being the Boss (I like to be in command)

*Making banners, logos, etc (I like making graphic designs)

*Own a Business (I have great views on businesses I want to open…like a club or an entertainment attraction for all ages).

_____________

Ive considered Biology…or Journalism with an emphasis in Print or Public Relations. But Im not sure. Im really scared of hard math (like Calculus).

You seem like a very creative person. Why not marketing or advertising? That would allow you to use your art and writing skills to develop ad campaigns and print advertisements or other media. You could even focus on international marketing or advertising to make the “travel” part happen — be sure to do a study abroad!

Make a distinction between soft skills you are good at (e.g. command and admin work), and academic/study content that you are really interested in (e.g. journalism?). There are some areas you are interested in e.g. own a business, that can be combined with your degree (when you get one eventually).

You should also ask yourself why you chose to write ‘animals’ as your first item in your list. If you are really interested, costs to the degree should not be the main obstacle. Secondly, the duration of study should not be a determining factor too. Would an employer want to hire someone who studied for 1 year for a degree? Surely there are vet courses that are not as long as what you imagine?

Lastly, do not assume that your current interests will last your career lifetime. It is becoming common that people switch careers at least twice in their lifetime. Cultivate your other interests at the same time, but focus on getting a degree that gets you somewhere. The salary of 30k is an added benefit if you manage to get there … it should not be the main attraction.

Consider a major in Journalism with a minor in Marketing/Advertising or Business Administration. I would advise you though to not go the route of Print Journalism as newspapers are starting to die out (sad, I know). Online media is where it’s at these days. Public relations is tough and requires stellar schmoozing skills and people skills.

It’ll all be tough but it’ll be worth it. Good luck to you.

I think you should narrow it down to the writing field, or graphic arts…since you like designing things…and if you go into graphic arts you could end up in a very good job right away. Writing has a lot of options, but might take longer. You actually could do both….learn the graphic arts field (computer graphic arts is in high demand)…and write on the side….because writing takes time.

I would say major in Journalism.

To narrow it down, since you like taking pictures, focus on photo Journalism. That way, once you establish yourself you can get sent on jobs that require travel. And if all goes well and you prove yourself in that area you might consider starting your own newspaper or magazine. That way you can be the boss and own your own business.

do you have to choose right now? i changed my major 3 times….and now that I’m out of school I’m not even in my field…which is fine! I’m still using skills and intelligence gained in school! …. but looking at your interests you may want to look into communications….or communication design. if your just entering college i wouldn’t worry too much, start with your basic core classes and explore the campus to see which department your drawn to.
