I consistently found that reading a chapter through without doing any other work will result in poor test and assignment performances. I realize that when I research and look at other resources after reading I tend to understand the material more. Most of the time, you need to understand the bigger picture or idea that is being presented. Don’t get stuck with memorizing details. Work from a higher level approach and then fill in details as you begin to solidify your understanding.

Finally, the most important thing is hard work. It is almost guaranteed that you will get better marks if you spend more time on a subject.
