I’ve heard pretty much what the answer above me has said. I heard that it’s hard to find a job—I mean, it could be a good and interesting major, just tough to get a job. Unless you want to be an English teacher?

Ummm, I received a degree in English Literature in December of 2005. I wanted to pursue something in the publishing/editing field, and went on what seemed to be a thousand job interviews to no avail. It was almost impossible for me to find a job anywhere, and when I finally did, it was as an administrative assistant for a publishing company, a job I didn’t even need a degree for! I am now going back to school to get a master’s and a teaching certificate. If I were you, I would pursue a different major solely on the difficulty I have had in trying to find a career.

You can definitely have a wonderful career in civil service working for the federal government or a state government or a county government with an Bachelor’s in English. It is amazing how many people in civil service don’t know how to write well or communicate well. WHile you are in college, I recommend you try to get a graduate student assistant type job with a government agency. If you can’t get a paying job (which you should be able to get), then try to get an unpaid internship. You can make a great career out of this! You could analyze legislation, write brouchures, pamphlets, write reports, write memos, etc. Supplement the english classes with some project management classes and statistics and political science.

Based on my experience is an excellent major. Probably you will not have a dramatic improve of your income. I like teaching, and I feel a more complete person. I have the project of writing, if your practice hard you can become an excellent writer and, who knows, have a good improvement of incomes.

Other possibility is correction of grammar in book enterprises. Make an evaluation, how many time, effort you want to invest? This is the thing you really want? As in business, the results will be good in terms of recovering the invest? That’s my advice.

It is a great degree if that is what you are interested in. It is a bad degree if you want your educaiton to increase your income. Teaching is about the only track i can think of for it. The skill set just does not translate into alot of job opportunities.
