Jobs for a Physics PhD?

What are some jobs that someone with a PhD in physics could expect to hold, aside from the obvious ‘professor’?

There are industrial/government/military physicist jobs. These are a lot easier to get if your PhD is in applied optics or nanotechnology, or something else with commercial applications, but not impossible even if you do particle physics.

There are also a lot of consulting companies that want to hire physics PhDs just because they’re smart and know how to work hard. There are plenty of financial analyst positions for people with excellent quantitative and modeling skills.

If you’re trying to decide whether to do a PhD in physics, you should know that while only about 1/3 of people who do this end up with permanent academic positions, the unemployment rate for physics and astronomy PhDs is below 1% (which is mostly just people who were laid off taking a month or two to find a suitable new job), and the vast majority of those surveyed said they were using skills they learned in grad school.
