You could major in Psychology with a Criminal Justice minor. Many of my friends are doing things like this and are loving how everything is working out. Talk to your college advisor about it.

I had this question when I first started. I looked up the different job posting engines and learned that a Bachelor’s in Psychology is much more in demand (10 to 1) than a Criminal Justice degree. I chose Psychology.

I understand your dilemma. I wanted to study both psychology and criminal justice in college. I decided to major in psychology and minor in criminal justice. I liked both subjects, but was more interested in psych between the two. Just keep in mind that a BA in either subject likely won’t get you jobs that pay a lot of money. You will have to go on to graduate school if you want a higher paying job. Right now I’m working as a therapist assistant on an adolescent psychiatric unit and am very glad I decided to major in psych, because it’s relevant to my job. I am going to grad school though, studying to get my master’s in social work to become a therapist. My psych background has been very helpful to me in grad school as well. So my vote is…go for psychology.

What field do you plan on working in? It’s great that you love both, but you should find out what kinds of jobs are available to people with BA in Psyc vs BA in Social/Criminal Justice. Since you don’t know if you will be getting a masters, you should find out what kinds of jobs you will be able to get. You might love Psyc but find out all the jobs out there for Psyc majors either have nothing to do with psyc, or are research assistants. You might find that BA in Social/Criminal Justice jobs require experience in law enforcement or lead to jobs working in environments that aren’t what you’d like. If the amount of money is imporant to you, find out what the starting salary is for people with Psyc vs Criminal Justice.
