aspiring pediatrician.. help!?

So I’m officially a senior in highschool now and college is just around the corner. Not to mention, applications are due in a matter of months. I’ve always had my life set for a career in the medical field. That’s where I belong. And just recently I’ve decided I wanna get into pediatrics. What are the majors/courses I need to take in order to go about this?

Most people who go to medical school major in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. However you can major in anything you want to and go to medical school. Statistics show that your major has very little correlation with whether you get in or not:

Minimum college course requirements to get into most U.S. medical schools include one year of each:

Biology

General (inorganic) chemistry

Organic chemistry

Physics

Related lab work for each science course

In addition, many schools require English and math courses.

Many schools will have arcane special course requirements, so you must research the schools you are interested in to make sure you have the courses they want.

One thing I would not recommend majoring in is premed. If you don’t get in, it looks bad on your transcript when you go into something else.

Majors: Pre Med or something similar will definately help getting into med school.

The shadowing route is something I would highly recomend. See if a pediatrician in your area would let you spend a day or two with them at their office to see what a day in the life would be like. Especially as a current Physician Assistant it is important to know that you want to be a pediatrician by the time you put 8-10 years of school (and payments for school) into something you are not wanting to do over the long run.

first things first. Can you handle being vomitted on? Can you handle being peed on by a baby?? Can you handle the accidental ” baby, crapped on me?”

If you have answered no to any of these, I would start babysitting, dealing with vomitrocious children and changing diapers.

Had I known being a mother would have involved all of the above, I would have gotten a fish.

J/K I love being a mom and I love loving on my 3 kids when they are sick. YOu wil do great in Peds, if that is truly where your calling is, go to a Peditricains office and ask them their opinions, where did they go to school, what other courses did they take, maybe even go as far as Candy Stripping in the children’s ward at a hospital.

Above all, love the work. Enjoy your Senior year.
