Tht is true. Just take any random number for “a” and “b.” Let a be 5 and let b be 7. 7 is greater than 5…correct? So, make both of those numbers negative, and which number is greater now? -5 is greater than -7. That is also correct.

There is this algebraic law which deals with inequalities that states that whenever you divide or multiply the entire inequality by a negative number, then you have to change the direction of the inequality. In your situation, you multiplied both sides of the inequality by negative 1 (a became -a, and be became -b) so the < became >.
