A little bit of each. If you get, like, 300 on your SATs, you’re not going to get one of those brochures from Harvard. But colleges DO send out tons of brochures, many to people who won’t get in and don’t have much of a chance of being accepted. Colleges like to cast a wide net, and they supposedly like as many people to apply as possible–so that when they reject 90% of applicants, they can say how amazing they are to have such a low acceptance rate.
Bottom line: Don’t believe the hype. If you’ve received mail from a college you’re interested in, check the admissions stats in U.S. News and World Report or another legitimate source, and see if you fit anywhere near the criteria necessary for admittance. If you fall far below the average SAT scores, GPA, etc., the school may not be right for you.
