Teaching license and certification question?

I have a Masters degree. If I decide to teach, do I have to go through the same process to get a teaching license/certification as someone who only have a Bachelors degree?

I had a Masters in Health Administration and undergraduate degrees in Business and Econ. When I decided to career change to teach I needed college algebra, US history, and art to meet state requirements to teach elementary school. I also needed teaching classes like child development, and teaching theory. I enrolled in a master of teaching program and they helped me map out what I needed for Virginia.

Not sure what your masters is in or how long you have been working. Some of your classes may translate in better than mine did. Also, some states have career switcher programs. I was not eligible as I had not been working in my health care position long. You may qualify to get a provisional license, with the real thing pending some coursework you can do while teaching.

In many states, a Masters is generally the minimum for any teaching position, so you’ll be competing with equals. The certification tests tend to be fairly simple, and just weed out a few percent.

In addition to a general MA or MS, many states require a practicum and a few teaching-specific courses. One could probably take all needed courses in one semester, but the practice teaching is a graded program that may take some time.

Check in the states where you might wish to teach for requirements, or try the URL below. Also note that private schools may not require certification, but tend to pay less.

It all depends on the state you live in. Check your state’s department of education website for the requirements. But generally, yes. You will need to take the same types of courses and practicum experiences that everyone else must take. The only exception would be that if during your Masters program you took some courses that are required by your state for teacher certification.

the teaching certification process varies from state to state, so i can speak to you how it’s done in texas. having a masters degree in the state of texas doesn’t exempt you from the requirements of becoming certified to teach in the state. however, it does give you a higher pay grade than a teacher who only possesses a bachelors degree.

what you will have to do is find an alternative certification program (a.c.p.) for teacher certification in your area. they can be found in most community colleges and are generally inexpensive. these programs are created for individuals who have a masters degree or higher and who did not receive a teaching certificate from their university upon completion of their degree. from there they will tell you what the requirements of your state are and how to become certified.

Yes.

It does not matter what level of education you have, it only matters what courses you have taken to meet the state’s certification requirements.

In a lot of states, your initial certification must come via a college or university. You might be able to work with a school district for an alternate certification program.

Go to your state’s Department of Education website and it will explain everything to you.

Good Luck.

If you get eighty% on a maths experiment you cross, proper? But naturally you are no longer able to instruct that fabric to any one else, considering that you received a 5th of it unsuitable. So the truth that any one has handed an undergraduate direction does no longer qualify them to instruct that direction. The commonplace required to instruct a direction is far larger than the commonplace required to cross the equal direction.
