simplify the expressions?

can someone do these problems AND show me the steps so that I understand? i’m in grade 7. I think they want me to do distributive property but I don’t understand it. thanks!

Simplify each expression.

a.) 3g-5-|8|

b.) 8(r+12)+5(2r+12)

c.) 4(m+4)+3(m+6)

d.) 12(c+3d)+2(2c+d)

a.) 3g-5-|8|

Since “| |” appears…it means absolute value, which means the number between those lines will always be positive

= 3g-5+8

Now isolate for 3g

5 – 8 = 3g

Isolate for g, divide by 3 and subtract 5 from 8

-3/3 = 3g/3

Now simplify

-1 = g

—-

b.) 8(r+12)+5(2r+12)

Distribute:

= 8r +96 + 10r + 60

Now collect like terms:

= 8r + 10r + 96 + 60

= 18r + 156

Isolate for 18r

-156 = 18r

And Isolate for “r” by dividing both sides by18

-156/18 = 18r/18

-26/3 = r

Question b uses the same method to solve for c and d

P.S. – I solved the equations instead of simplifying the expressions

a.) 3g – 5 – |8| = 3g – 5 – 8 = 3g – 13

(note the negative is NOT inside the absolute value)

b.) 8(r+12) + 5(2r+12)

= 8r + 96 + 10r + 60

= 18r + 156

c.) 4(m+4) + 3(m+6)

= 4m + 16 + 3m + 18

= 7m + 34

d.) 12(c+3d) + 2(2c+d)

= 12c + 36d + 4c + 2d

= 16c + 38d

that’s it! 🙂 Just be aware that the distributive property means that what’s next to the ()’s, multiplies everything inside the ()’s.
