I agree w/most of the other posters. I think it’s simply because there are times when getting up to sharpen a pencil is just too distracting. What’s funny is that on the elementary level, some of us prefer that students NOT bring mechanical pencils b/c they just like to play with the lead…and then they don’t have any lead left when they really need it.

I had a teacher that had us use a mechanical pencil so that during a test no one would have to get up and use the pencil sharpener because the pencil sharpener was very loud and distracting.

Getting up to sharpen pencils can be a huge distraction for others if you are to be working independantly or are taking a test.

Also, many kids will use sharpening a pencil to talk to others or avoid doing their work. Of course they will still try to avoid working with a mechanical pencil, but you won’t have one or two who purposely break the pencil just to get up from their seats and stroll leisurely to the sharpener and back.

I had teachers that wanted us to have mechanical ones so that, for instance, during a test, no one would have to sharpen their regular pencil and disturb the whole class. It seems kinda silly, but they wouldn’t ask you to do it if they didn’t have a reason. Good luck with the school year.

They probably don’t want anyone having to get up and sharpen their pencils (this can lead to cheating)
