Is it OK to take a course online?

Grade twelve math isn’t offered next semester, so they’ll let me take it online so I can go on to uni next sept, and not come back.

Is the education that same? Will I be prepared for uni? (Don’t really want to show up with a room full of kids, understanding math better than myself).

I took an on-line science course in college and worked my way through the course fine, but retaining information and the testing is not the same as a normal course. If you are just looking for a elective to meet your credits, it would be fine, but if you are looking to go into college looking for a math major or something that will use the knowledge of this class extensively than I would take an acutal classroom class.

If you are a dedicated student this may be a great opportunity! Of course it will help if the course has an advisor you can email or call to answer specific questions, be sure to ask. If you are able to work faster than the pacing guide, and you are a good math student, imagine all the extra time you won’t be spending going over what you already understand! You will not be in any worse position having tried the online version and may get to move ahead.

I have taken 17 online courses offered through real colleges–Columbus State Community College and Franklin University. I am on pace to get my BS in Business Forensics next year.

Online is like correspondence courses–you are pretty much teaching yourself the topic with support from your professors and other online classmates. If you can discipline yourself, and understand that YOU are responsible for your learning, then it might be good for you.

Yes, it will be fine. When you learn at home as opposed to in a classroom, it’s all up to you keeping yourself accountable. If you have trouble understand a concept, it might be easier to have a teacher or tutor that you can turn to, though… can you ask your current or a former math teacher for extra help if necessary?

Honestly, half of the kids show up at college not understanding basic algebraic functions, which is why they have remedial algebra courses… you should be fine!

I am a teacher for an online high school, so of course, I think its a valid way of taking a course. However, I’ve just taken 4 online university courses this summer and I thought it was great. I was able to work at my own pace and not have to worry about students who were slower to catch on than me.

As long as you take it through a credible university or college-usually not one that advertises its online classes online. State universities typically offer them. I’d go that route. They’re fine. Like any class, some online courses are better than others. It all depends on the professor.
