What college classes do I need to take in order to become a Spanish teacher?

I’m already fluent in Spanish. So I’m thinking of becoming a Spanish teacher but I don’t know what classes I need to take in college. Help?

Also. How many years of college do I need? I think it’s 4 but I’m not sure.

To be a Spanish teacher in a public school, you need to be certified fo teach Spanish for your appropriate grade level. You must have a degree in Spanish, with a transcript reflecting a major in spanish, or equivalent. You next need to become certified to teach. After you receive your bachelor’s degree you will need to apply to an education program to become certified and highly qualified. This may include obtaining a separate Master’s or second bachelor’s in Education, and various teacher preparation tests and the Praxis (II, I think).

For a private school, you usually still need at least a major in Spanish. Even if you are a native speaker in the language, you can take the CLEP exam and receive credit for the first 2 (beginner and intermediate) years, but you will have to take actually take the remainder of Spanish classes to finish your degree along with the general studies component. depending on many factors, it usually takes 4 years, but some people do finish in 3 or 3.5.

To teach at the junior college/university level, you will need a Master’s in Spanish or at least a graduate degree in another field with 18 hours of Spanish at the graduate level. Universities usually require the Ph.D. in Spanish.

Being fluent in Spanish is great, but it is much easier to obtain the job if you are certified or have teaching experience.
