Can I really work 40 hours a week as a substitute?

People keep telling me that there is this huge demand for subs and that I can work as much as I want, but it just doesn’t seem like there will be work available all the time.

When I subbed I worked every day. I was willing to work all grade levels & spent a lot of time at the high school, where no one else wanted to go. If the teacher likes you, they will likely tell the person who calls the subs & you’ll be in demand. Plus, they’ll tell the other teachers & they’ll request you, too.

To get the teachers on your side, make sure you follow what they give you & keep the class under control. I know that when I have a sub that lets my class run wild, I’ll call & request that she not be sent back to my class.

Keep in mind, at the first of the year teachers don’t usually take off much. Demand should be picking up.

I have subbed for 4 years and worked everyday I wanted to work. It all depends on what ur willnig to do. I did all grades the first two years. The last two i spent 75% of the time at the same school. The down side, no benefits. Plus the kids do not respect subs. At least not at first. So be tough-skinned and tough on them. U can ease up once they know u. That said not all sub are the same, so if u suck , u won’t have any luck.

Subbing jobs are kind of hit and miss unless a teacher takes an extended leave of absence, or suddenly quits or gets fired. I had a teacher in the 8th grade take a long maternity leave early in the year. They brough in a substitute teacher, and she took over the class for the rest of the year.

In Utah substitute teachers can work just about year round, depending on the school district you work in. Sometimes we have teachers that are unable to attend meetings and take personal days because of the shortage.

It’s very possible, but subbing isn’t easy.

It depends on which school system you’re in.

I feel confident that if they like you, they will keep calling you to sub for them.

Once word gets out that you know your stuff, you will be plenty busy.

It depends on where you are and how many schools you are associated with…
