Opportunities & Careers via a GED?

Well, I’m 16 years old and I live with my mom currently in Brooklyn NY. Financially, we’re living on the “edge” due to the fact that we just survived Hurricane Katrina a year ago. Anyways, my question here is ever since Katrina, I have lost complete interest in highschool. I used to be a honors student prior and loved the fact of acing things, but when I go back to school, I just have no interest whatsoever, I have no problems acing my tests but it’s more of a “social dilemma”, I feel like I have changed alot and I wanna have a bright career but the current system is not competitive at all, well atleast to me.. so I figured I would get my GED done quick and take care of my mom financially without dealing with school, but I’m just wondering, how will it benefit me in the future because when I started highschool, I was planning on going to Harvard and becoming a chemical engineer but I don’t know if that is possible right now, I would like to know if there is such a possibility still? TY

A GED is just as good as a high school diploma for most jobs but not so much for colleges. Getting your GED does not preclude going to college, but they might require some college credit before entering a better school. If you truly cannot focus on school and need to help financially, you might consider getting your GED and 2 years of a community college. This will get a lot of your mandatory classes out of the way while still giving you a chance to earn money. Also, “real world” work experience will be a bonus on your resume. Try talking to your guidance counselor about your concerns. They are a great resource for getting where you want to go. Good luck!

You and you mom need to move someplace with a lower cost of living. NY housing is nuts.

Dreams are nice, but getting into Harvard is tough. Staying in is even harder. You are sure going to have a harder time with a GED.

A GED will give you a future beyond fast food or retail clerk, but thats it.

Do you have an interest in chemical enginering, or is it just a field that you think will give you a decent income. You are a train ride away from one if the best libraries in the world. You can look up related fields easily. You can also find out what Universities offer the courses you need. I would imagine you will need to get a masters to get anywhere.

Whatever you decide, living school is the biggest mistake you will ever make. If you quit now and get a job, you will be at that job for the rest of your life. You will be a lot more help to your mom if you get a degree

just hang in there, it’s just a few more years, you can do it.
